The Pirarucu is one of the main fish in the Amazon, and the largest freshwater scaled fish in the world. It is also one of the most traditional dishes in local cuisine. Its fishing is carried out by riverine populations in a sustainable manner, under the control of government agencies and NGOs dedicated to the preservation of the species and biodiversity.

All management is sustainable and controlled by Ibama (Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources), which establishes regulations for its fishing, such as permitted months of the year and minimum size.

The skins are a byproduct of the fishing industry, originating from regulated breeding or sustainable and controlled management programs. What was once discarded as waste has become the raw material for refined accessories.
